Signs Your Panel Needs to Be Upgraded

Most Twin Cities homes built before 1990 were wired for a lifestyle that didn't include EV chargers, whole-home generators, or high-draw kitchen appliances. If your panel is struggling to keep up, these are the warning signs to watch for.

Breakers that trip repeatedly

A breaker that trips more than once or twice a year on the same circuit is telling you that circuit is overloaded. Resetting it is not a fix — it's a sign the panel can't handle your load.

🔥

Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel

These brands have documented histories of breaker failure and are considered fire hazards. Many homeowners insurance policies now require replacement. If your panel says 'Stab-Lok', call us today.

💡

Flickering or dimming lights

Lights that flicker when you run the dishwasher or dryer indicate a panel that's struggling to distribute power evenly across circuits.

🔌

No room for new circuits

Planning to add an EV charger, hot tub, or home addition? A full panel means you can't add circuits without first upgrading the service.

📟

Panel rated below 200 amps

Homes with 60-amp or 100-amp service are severely underpowered for modern electrical demand. A 200-amp upgrade is the standard for today's homes.

👃

Burning smell near the panel

Any burning odor near your electrical panel is an emergency. Turn off the main breaker and call us immediately.

What's Included in a Panel Upgrade

Every panel upgrade Integrity Electric performs includes the permit, the inspection coordination, and a confirmed price before we start. Here's what the process looks like from start to finish.

On-Site Estimate

We visit your home, assess your current panel and load, and give you a confirmed quote — not a range. You know the exact price and what the job involves before we schedule.

Permit & Utility Coordination

We pull the permit and coordinate the utility disconnect with Xcel Energy or your local utility. You don't have to make a single call.

Professional Installation

We complete the panel upgrade efficiently and professionally. We minimize the time your power is off and clean up completely before we leave.

City Inspection

After installation, we schedule and pass the required city inspection. You receive a copy of the passed permit for your records and for future home sales.

200-Amp or 400-Amp Service

We upgrade to 200-amp service as standard. Homes with EV chargers, shops, or future additions can be upgraded to 400-amp service.

Labor Warranty

All labor is warranted by Integrity Electric. Equipment and materials are covered by the manufacturer's warranty. If our installation isn't right, we come back and make it right.

Transparent, Confirmed Pricing

Panel upgrades vary significantly based on your home's current wiring, the panel size required, your municipality's permit fees, and whether the existing installation needs corrections to meet current code. Because of these variables, we don't publish price ranges — they rarely reflect what your specific project actually costs.

What we do instead: we come to your home, assess the full scope of the work, and give you a confirmed quote before anything is scheduled. The price we quote is the price you pay. No surprises, no add-ons for permits or inspections.

Confirmed Quote

You receive a firm price before we schedule — not a range, not an estimate. What we quote is what you pay.

Permit Included

The permit fee is included in your quote. We pull it, coordinate the inspection, and hand you the passed paperwork.

No Hidden Charges

Utility coordination, inspection scheduling, and cleanup are part of the job. We don't add line items after the fact.

Financing Available

We work with homeowners to find payment options that fit their situation. Ask us about financing when you call.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my electrical panel needs to be upgraded?

Common signs include breakers that trip frequently, a panel rated below 200 amps, a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel (known fire hazards), flickering lights, burning smells near the panel, or an inability to add new circuits for EV chargers or appliances.

How long does a panel upgrade take?

Every panel upgrade is different. Before we schedule, we walk you through exactly what your specific project involves and what the time commitment looks like — so there are no surprises on the day of the job.

Do I need a permit for a panel upgrade in Minnesota?

Yes. All electrical panel upgrades in Minnesota require a permit and inspection. Integrity Electric handles the permit application and coordinates the inspection with your local municipality — you don't need to do anything.

What size panel do I need?

Most modern homes need a 200-amp panel. Homes with EV chargers, hot tubs, electric ranges, or plans for future additions may benefit from a 400-amp service. We assess your current and future load during the on-site visit.

Is a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel dangerous?

Yes. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco panels have documented histories of breaker failure and are considered fire hazards by the electrical industry. If your home has one, we strongly recommend replacement. Many insurance companies now require it.

What does the warranty cover?

Integrity Electric warrants all labor on panel upgrades. Equipment and materials are covered by the manufacturer's warranty. We stand behind our work — if something isn't right with our installation, we come back and make it right.
